5th graders, you've learned about Thomas Jefferson from a variety of different sources. What do you think about the contradictions in his life? How are the words he wrote in the Declaration of Independence different from the life he led at Monticello?
it is different because he had slaves but he even said in the Declaration of Independence that there should be no slaves.
ReplyDelete1 reason that happened was in the declaration of independence there was no slavery. But he own slaves.
ReplyDeleteAt Monticello he was not as quiet as he was when he was in Philadelphia. At Monticello he was more open to talk. And in the Declaration Of Independence he said all men are created equal. But I think he was talking about white men.
ReplyDeleteHe was very ironic. He said things in the Declaration of Independence that he didn't do at Monticello. Like he said slaves were wrong and that law needed to be changed, but he owned slaves at the time when he was writing it. He also wrote about how all men are created equal. He forgot about women and men are created equal. Plus, when he said that all men are created equal, he only meant white men, not brown/black men too.
ReplyDeleteHe said in the original Declaration of Independence to not own slaves. And he did not like or necessarily praise slavery but yet he own a lot of slaves.
ReplyDeleteHe never treated his CHILDREN LIKE HIS CHILDREN
well the contradictions are he didn't want slaves but he had children with Sally Hemmings.
ReplyDeleteOne contradiction is that he said," All men are created equal how ever he had slaves. And he lived a happy life and when he said all men are equal he didn't follow that rule
ReplyDeleteI think his the Declaration of Independence was keeping his own family to be slaves but when he died he kept his family promise when he died.
ReplyDeleteIn the Declaration of Independence he wrote there should not be slaves however at Monticello he had slaves. Some of his kids were slaves too.
ReplyDeletethe Declaration of Independence is different because he wanted to end slavery and did but it went on a long time
