One Book One School

For the next two weeks, our whole school is reading The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught her to Fly by Luis Sepulveda.  We are so excited about this One Book One School project!

In the first section of the book, we've met Kengah and Zorba.  Kengah, a seagull covered in sludge from an oil spill, lays an egg and extracts three promises from Zorba the cat: don't eat the egg, look after the egg until the chick is born, and teach the chick to fly.  Teach the chick to fly!  How is a cat going to teach a chick to fly?

What do you think is going to happen?  If you were Zorba the cat, how would you approach this challenge?

    I think zorba will help the chick on the bridge to fly and I think they're going to have a bad time.

    I think the egg will fall then zorba will try to catch it but he does not then it will be very close
    to the ground and his friend dives in and catch it.

    I think the egg is going to hatch then the cat is going to throw the seagull up in the air and it won't fly. Then the seagull falls off the balcony and starts flying.

    I think Zorba will go with the other cats to eat and when he gets back the egg will have hatched. I also think that the Kenya's body (the seagull) will have disappeared.

    I think that Zorba is going to wait until the egg hatches and when he thinks the chick is old enough to fly, Zorba will pick it up and throw it of the balcony and will hope that it flies.

    How I think Zorba is going to teach the egg to fly is teach it to run and then flap it's wings and practice and some how fly.

    I think Zorba will try to teach the baby seagull to fly by having a lot of padding on the ground, under the balcony then he will have the baby seagull jump off the balcony. Then the baby seagull will keep trying and will eventually learn to fly.

    I think Zorba will teach the gull how to fly. And give the gull a name like, Kangeh and the other cats will try to kill it again.

    So far in the book the cat who taught the to fly Kenga died of a oil spill and now Zorba has to teach the seagull to fly I wonder how teaching a seagull to fly will go?

    I think Zorba is going to drop the egg off the balcony and the egg is going to start rolling down into the water and the seagull will break out of the egg and fly out of the water.

    I think when the egg hatches he well feed it worms and it wont work because it needs blend worms and he gets some and then when he is settle and he will fly of the couch and he will fly not off the couch and she will fall and hart her wing and and have to try to fly again and fly!

    I bet that the gull will learn to fly but will not want to leave her family.
    I wonder if zorba will get attached to the sea gull and will not want her to leave?

    I like the the book because it is a petty good and the cat is trying to keep a promise to the mother bird not to eat the baby bird and these rats are trying to get the baby bird and eat it.

    so i think the chick will try to fly and will get it but also will not want to leave zorba. Maybe another seagull will come and take the chick and help it grow up strong because how will zorba teach the chick to fly if zorba can't. so what will happened next will another seagull come or will the chick have to try

    I think that someone will find the seagull and take it to a shelter and Zorba will chase after him. I also think that the rats are going to go to the market and the cats will have to attack.

    I think that the bird is going to be with the cat forever and I think that the seagull will probably wont fly right if the manages to teach the seagull.

    I wished the seagull did not die and its sad so sad. The cat will take care of the baby seagull and the cat will feed it worms.

    I think that Lucky won't want to fly because he or she might want to be more like a cat.
