The Caldecott and Newbery Medal Announcement!

5th graders, after reading The Last Stop on Market Street, do you think it was a good choice for the Newbery Medal?  Why or why not?

Remember that the Newbery committee takes the following things into consideration:
  • Interpretation of the theme or concept
  • Presentation of information including accuracy, clarity, and organization
  • Development of a plot
  • Delineation of characters
  • Delineation of a setting
  • Appropriateness of style

  15. I don't think The Last Stop On Market Street should have won the Newbery Award because it is a kid book with a child plot and the characters were ok and the setting was ok but other wise I did not like it.

  16. I think that Last Stop on Market Street is a good choice for the Newbery Medal because it teaches kids that you can find beauty in every place, good or bad. That also, goes along with the setting too, because Grandma saw beauty in this run down, old place. These are some reasons why I think that Last Stop on Market Street is a good enough book for the Newbery Award.
